Feed Stray Cattle: Save Cows India Charitable Trust’s Initiative for Urban Welfare

Food for Stray Cattle Project

Executive Summary:

The 'Food for Stray Cattle' project, spearheaded by Save Cows India Charitable Trust, addresses the critical issue of malnutrition among stray cattle in urban areas. The stray cattle often consume plastic and other harmful materials, from garbage, leading to severe health issues / complications and even death for the cattle. Our solution is to collect food from various restaurants, install sturdy aluminium containers for food and water near residential complexes and vegetarian restaurants, providing a safe and reliable food source for these animals.

Project Objectives:

1. To reduce the consumption of harmful substances by stray cattle by providing alternative food sources.

2. To engage local communities from various residential complexes and businesses (vegetarian restaurants, vegetable markets) in the welfare of stray cattle through responsible waste disposal.

3. To establish a sustainable system for food distribution that can be scaled up with the support of restaurant associations and municipal corporations.

Implementation Plan:

- Phase 1: We will hire a cycle van with a beat plan to collect food and deliver it at select locations in Kolkata. We launch a pilot with 3-4 partner restaurants (preferably vegetarian restaurants) to test the feasibility and impact of the initiative.

- Phase 2: Expand the program by collaborating with the Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI), Hotel & Restaurant Association of Eastern India (HRAEI), and local municipal bodies.

- Phase 3: Implement a monitoring system with area supervisors responsible for identifying the container locations where the cows generally come to find food, clean up the unconsumed food in the local garbage collection & coordinating with waste management services and maintaining the quality and branding of the containers.

Budget and Funding:

The project will be funded by donations, which will cover the costs of manufacturing and installing the containers, as well as the operational expenses of the area supervisors. Restaurants will incur no costs as they will be provided with branded containers for food waste.

Conclusion:

This initiative not only aims to improve the health and well-being of stray cattle but also promotes community involvement and responsible waste management. We seek the support of donors to bring this compassionate and eco-friendly project to fruition. Together, we can create a healthier environment for both animals and humans.
