Leukemia

White blood cells are one of the key components of blood. It fights with the infections and germs in the blood. People with blood cancer or Leukemia produce an excessive amount of these white blood cells, leading severe imbalances inside the body. Blood cancer occurs in the blood reproducing tissues, including bone marrow and lymphatic systems.

There are several types of leukemia – some are common in adults and some in young children. Leukemia symptoms vary depending on the type of it. But few common signs are:

  • Fever or chills
  • Persistent fatigue, weakness
  • Frequent or severe infections
  • Losing weight without trying
  • Swollen lymph nodes, enlarged liver or spleen
  • Easy bleeding or bruising
  • Recurrent nosebleeds
  • Tiny red spots in your skin
  • Excessive sweating, especially at night
  • Bone pain or tenderness

 

Generally, blood cancer or leukemia occurs due to DNA mutation in blood cells. But there are other risk factors involved like:

  1. If someone taken radiotherapy or chemotherapy in the past for previous cancer treatment, there is a high chance to develop leukemia.
  1. Genetic disorders like Down Syndrome have an increased chance of leukemia occurrence.
  1. Exposure to certain chemicals can lead to blood cancer.
  1. Smoking is also very much related with leukemia.
  1. Family history of leukemia plays a major part in chances of developing leukemia.

According to Statista, the cases between 2009 and 2021 has increased about 38.62% in men, in the USA.
