Yoni = female reproductive system (vagina + uterus region in Ayurveda).
Prakshalana = washing / cleansing.
Kashayam = herbal decoction (medicated herbal extract prepared by boiling herbs in water).
π In this procedure, lukewarm medicated decoctions (Kashayam) are prepared using herbs like Triphala, Neem, Lodhra, Daruharidra, Musta, Guduchi, Khadira etc., and used to gently wash/irrigate the vaginal region.
The herbs are selected according to the dosha imbalance (Vata-Pitta-Kapha) and the specific condition of the patient.
Yoni Prakshalana is advised in conditions where there is dosha imbalance in the Yoni region (Apana Vata disturbances, Pitta-related burning, Kapha-related discharges).
β Indications include:
Yoni kandu (itching in vaginal area)
Yoni srava (white/yellow vaginal discharge, leucorrhea)
Foul-smelling discharges, infections (fungal, bacterial)
Vaginal dryness, burning, irritation
Inflammatory conditions (cervicitis, vaginitis)
Adjuvant therapy for infertility treatment (improves uterine/vaginal health)
Post-natal vaginal cleansing and toning
Purva Karma (Preparation):
Patient is made to lie in a comfortable supine position.
Kashayam (herbal decoction) is freshly prepared and filtered.
Pradhana Karma (Main procedure):
Warm decoction is gently poured or irrigated over the vaginal region.
Sometimes, a sterile syringe or douche set may be used for internal washing.
The process is repeated for a few minutes depending on the condition.
Paschat Karma (After-care):
The area is dried with a soft clean cloth.
Light local application of medicated oil/ghee may be done depending on the condition.
Patient is advised to maintain genital hygiene and avoid intercourse/exertion immediately after therapy.
Cleanses accumulated Kapha, discharge, mucus, toxins (ama) from vaginal canal.
Reduces itching, burning, bad odor, and excessive discharge.
Balances local pH and microflora, preventing infections.
Promotes tissue healing in cases of ulcers, cervicitis, vaginitis.
Provides cooling, soothing, and anti-inflammatory effects (esp. in Pitta conditions).
Enhances local circulation β improves vaginal and uterine tone.
Can be supportive therapy for fertility, menstrual health, and post-natal recovery.
β οΈ Precautions / Contraindications
Not done during pregnancy or menstruation.
Not advised in acute pelvic inflammatory disease unless supervised.
Should only be done under the guidance of an Ayurvedic physician, as wrong herbs may worsen symptoms.
Acute conditions (itching, discharge, infection): π Yoni Prakshalana or Yoni Dhupana
Dryness, infertility, uterine weakness: π Yoni Pichu or Yoni Vasti
Postpartum cleansing/toning: π Yoni Prakshalana (wash) + Yoni Dhupana (smoke)
(Chronic Vata disorders in reproductive system: π Yoni Vasti (also called Uttara Vasti when done intra-uterine)
